Mrs & Mr Shameem: Redefining masculinity

approx read time: 10-15mins Mrs & Mr Shameem... a drama I literally have no words for! The drama brings together the powerhouse performances of Nauman Ijaz and Saba Qamar through an unconventional and gripping storyline. The couple face quite literally every problem on the cards together but come out stronger in the end...Let us explore the performances and taboo themes intertwined that stem from true masculinity, opposing common stereotypes... Poster Title I'd like to actually put some emphasis on the drama poster title. What does it really suggest to an audience? Did you notice that typically we say Mr & Mrs but the drama is actually Mrs & Mr? Was this intentional? The "Mr Shameem" is written in italics which to me seems really feminine. The "Mrs Shameem" is written in capital which I think suggests bold dominance. Now, if we were to match these up to the characters of Umi and Shammo, who would you say represents which title? Casting Okay so what i

Inside Ali Ansari & Saboor Aly's wedding festivities

Ali Ansari and Saboor Aly officially tie the knot on 7th January💍
Let's take a look inside their star-studded wedding festivities...🎊

Nikkah

The couple officially tied the knot at a daytime Nikkah ceremony on Friday 7th January and were joined by family and celebrity friends which included Kinza Hashmi, Sadia Ghaffar, Aiman Khan, and many more.

Saboor Aly recreated her late mother's wedding look for her big day and wore a traditional gold gharara outfit created by Faiza Saqlain. The bride did not go for the typical heavy glam makeup look of glittery eyeshadow and red lips- but rather went for a simple neutral look and pink lips. However, Saboor did decide to go all out with her jewellery on her Nikkah wearing a nose ring, a choker necklace, a teeka, a jhoomer, a long string necklace, and a ring bracelet. Ali Ansari wore a classic white sherwani (also by Faiza Saqlain) with the traditional sehra and shawl. We believe Ali could've gone with something more similar in colours to Saboor's outfit and picked up the ancient gold tones for his sherwani choice too. Nonetheless- Ali Ansari's shendi look did not fail to impress us🤭

We absolutely loved the elegant fairytale set-up of this daytime Nikkah event. The outdoor aesthetic of the event was mainly of a white flower arrangement with gold decor alongside a pool filled with white flower petals. We loved how traditional this Nikkah was and how Saboor's bridesmaids were dressed in pretty pastels-everything tied in to make this a fairytale Nikkah ceremony.

Shendi

The very next day the couple were seen celebrating at their Shendi event dancing away the night💃. Saboor's sister Sajal and bestie Kinza Hashmi were seen on the dance floor twirling whilst the groom Ali was shown to give a power-packed and expressive performance. Ali absolutely nailed his performance to Hardy Sandhu's trending song Bijlee through his electrifying (see what we did there😉💥) energy and excitement beaming from his face. Saboor was also seen solo performing for her husband as she twirled in a dazzling blue lengha choli. The couple went for a glittery dark blue theme with their outfits which complimented each other. Ali's outfit particularly drew attention when he was on the dance floor and his outfit was sparkling in the lights.

Saboor and Ali as a couple have shown to be confident in breaking stereotypes and in expressing themselves through their actions. This however goes two ways and sometimes leads to criticism by the general public. Many netizens criticised Saboor for 'doing too much' as she is seen in a viral photo kissing husband Ali on the cheek. Many people have gone as far as calling Saboor 'beghairat' for showcasing something which should've been done privately. The flip side to this I ask you is why is it not beghairat when a husband practically drags their wife out the house in front of the whole neighbourhood yelling and bad-mouthing her?

Do we need to normalise showing affection to your spouse in public in the Pakistani culture? Whilst this action of Saboor kissing her husband publicly is culturally looked-down upon, the type of backlash that she has received from this photo going viral criticising her about this is unjustified.

Reception

In contrast to the traditional Nikkah event, the couple held a modern reception party with fun games and emotional speeches. Once again, Saboor was criticized; this time for her choice of dressing. Saboor wore a turquoise bodycon dress with 2 big bows and the groom was seen in a black tuxedo. However, we feel the whole outfit was inappropriate for the occasion- the bows look silly like it's a child's birthday party and the fitting of the dress doesn't seem appropriate for a bride. We understand Saboor wanted to go for a modern look and she could've achieved this by wearing a gown-style dress with heavy beadwork. As for the groom, unfortunately, similar to the Nikkah look we believe his outfit colour wasn't fitting to match with his bride. Ali wore a black tuxedo which is usually very common among wedding guests. We believe Ali could've gone for a 3-piece pastel suit, maybe in baby blue with a contrasting dark blue bow tie/inner shirt. On this occasion, we do want to share our favourite wedding guest looks...

Let's first take a look at the bride's sister Sajal who looked effortlessly pretty in a heavy salwar kameez outfit. The style of this outfit was different to a traditional salwar kameez outfit- the kameez was slightly shorter with heavy beadwork on the sleeves and a thicker thread work border. The colour of the kameez was of a rustic gold with peachy pastel shades within the floral embroidery. The contrast of the trousers is what we absolutely LOVED- a berry pink with sparkly gold beadwork that Sajal perfectly matched with heavy gold earrings. As for hair and makeup; Sajal went for a soft peachy makeup look and her curls were just😍😍. Sajal totally looked like a regal doll at her sister's reception.
How many of you noticed the tasbeeh counter on her hand? 👀

Kinza Hashmi became the show stealer at her best friend's reception dinner- some say she looked better than the bride! Kinza's unique outfit choice has made it difficult for me to describe the style😅. Kinza was glammed in a Sana Safinaz dazzling trouser set black saree with gold thread work. The outfit was paired with matching dainty drop earrings, a classic gold watch, and a few simple gold rings. As for makeup, the actress looked glamorous in a soft kohl eye look with super dewy skin and amplified nude lips. One word for Kinza= classy

Why was Ahad Raza Mir absent?

The biggest issue that has been raised all over social media (and rightfully so) during the wedding festivities has been the absence of Saboor Aly's brother-in-law Ahad Raza Mir. Fans also noticed that Ahad has been missing from Sajal's Khel Khel Mein promotions and Saboor and Ali's Baat Pakki. When Sajal was asked why Ahad did not attend the premiere, she replied saying "Ahad is at work, he is not in Pakistan" but around the same time Ahad was spotted at a party in Karachi...

Sajal has consistently been seen at the forefront of her sister Saboor's wedding festivities and it's quite upsetting to see that her husband was missing during something so important for Sajal. During this time, photos of Ahad and his family attending another wedding in Dubai have been circulating on social media for which Ahad and even his mother have received backlash. All of this has resulted in Sahad separations rumours- a couple that was once loved by many.

However, Sajal recently uploaded a selfie with Ahad on her Instagram stories- an indirect response to the separation rumours?

Whose was your favourite wedding guest outfit? Saboor Aly's public display of affection beghairat? Sahad soon to divorce? Let us know your thoughts...
